As a Sea King Helicopter pilot, she led missions throughout Europe and the Middle East. She worked on the Battle Watch Floor in the European Theater during the Iraq War, served as a Flag Aide to the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and was a Russian policy officer aiding in the implementation of our nuclear treaty obligations and oversaw the relationship between the U.S. Navy and Russian Federation Navy. <h3>Following her service in the Navy, Mikie attended and graduated from law school.</h3>She worked in private practice and then joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey. As an Outreach and Reentry Coordinator, Mikie established programs to develop trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve and helped people leaving prison to gain employment, housing, and education to restart their lives. Then as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, she prosecuted federal cases to keep our communities safe and worked to take illegal guns off the streets of New Jersey. <h3>After Donald Trump was first elected, Mikie knew she had to do something to stand up for New Jersey, her country, and the values she swore an oath to defend in the Navy.</h3><img src="https://run.imgix.net/05fcbbdf-a115-4bfe-91f4-200835f30713/c5670c06-8830-4ba2-9131-7fd4ef7ee86c/c5670c06-8830-4ba2-9131-7fd4ef7ee86c.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C3386%2C1846&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">In her first-ever run for office, she led a grassroots movement and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 to represent New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. Her campaign – where she drove an entrenched Republican incumbent out of the race – marked the biggest swing from red to blue in the country that year.&nbsp; <h3>As a mother raising four children, Mikie is a strong voice in Congress for New Jersey’s families.</h3>Mikie is working hard to bring down costs for families – whether it’s grocery prices, child care, or Trump’s SALT cap that punished New Jersey families. After constant roadblocks from the Christie and Trump administrations, Mikie helped deliver New Jersey’s fair share of federal funding on the Gateway Tunnel Project – the single-largest infrastructure project in American history, which will create good-paying union jobs and reduce commute times for families. <h2>Costos de atención médica</h2>Nueva Jersey cuenta con una industria de atención médica de clase mundial, pero para muchas familias, los costos son abrumadores. Como congresista ayudé a aprobar una ley federal que disminuyó drásticamente el costo de la atención médica para los adultos mayores y limitó el precio de la insulina a $35 USD mensuales —y limitará, además, el gasto de los adultos mayores en medicamentos de prescripción a $2,000 USD anuales—. Pero tenemos que hacer más. Pero en el ámbito de la atención médica, los pacientes muchas veces no conocen los precios hasta que reciben la factura hospitalaria. Cuando los pacientes tengan la opción de comparar precios con antelación, la competencia aumentará y hará que los precios disminuyan. Mantener los costos de la atención médica bajo control garantizará que todos en Nueva Jersey tengan acceso a la atención que necesitan sin endeudarse.

Esta crisis de vivienda afecta a millones de habitantes en Nueva Jersey. Implica que los jóvenes ya no pueden vivir donde crecieron después de graduarse de la universidad, que los adultos mayores ya no pueden envejecer o encontrar un hogar cerca de sus hijos y sus nietos cuando se jubilen y deseen mudarse a un lugar más pequeño, y que las empresas opten por establecerse en otros estados porque su fuerza laboral no puede darse el lujo de vivir aquí. También fortaleceré los programas para compradores de vivienda por primera vez para permitir que más residentes de Nueva Jersey generen equidad en las comunidades donde trabajan y para combatir a los propietarios que discriminan ilegalmente a las familias y no mantienen sus propiedades en condiciones habitables. Algunos padres se ven obligados a inscribir a sus hijos en programas que no se ajustan a su presupuesto o incluso a abandonar su trabajo para poder cuidarlos. Como madre de cuatro hijos, este tema es personal para mí. Recuerdo haber tenido que tomar esa decisión cuando buscaba una guardería para mis hijos. Me he reunido con varias familias de Nueva Jersey y he escuchado de viva voz que el precio de los alimentos es una gran preocupación. Como madre que adquiere alimentos para una familia de seis miembros, incluidos dos hijos adolescentes, me identifico. Como congresista presenté un proyecto de ley que ofrecería incentivos a pequeñas tiendas de alimentos para ayudarlas a competir contra grandes corporaciones y reducir los precios. Como gobernadora, trabajaré con nuestras pequeñas empresas para igualar las condiciones y aumentar la competencia en todo nuestro estado, lo que reducirá directamente los gastos de alimentos para las familias. CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED ON NOV. 18 AND QUALIFIED FOR MATCHING FUNDS ON HISTORIC FIRST DAY RAISE BLOOMFIELD — After <a href="https://x.com/MikieSherrill/status/1858480848422445362" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">launching her campaign</a> for New Jersey Governor on Nov. 18, Mikie Sherrill raised $1.36 million in her first six weeks as a candidate. A historic first-day fundraising haul also qualified her campaign for the state’s matching funds program. Mikie begins the first quarter of 2025 with over $1 million cash-on-hand.&nbsp; “New Jersey is ready for a different kind of leadership in Trenton and we’re encouraged by the groundswell of support and excitement that we’ve seen for Mikie on the campaign trail in these first few weeks. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) has at last <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/governor/mikie-sherrill-enters-race-for-democratic-gubernatorial-nomination/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">entered the 2025 race</a> for governor of New Jersey. She says she has a clear plan for what she wants to do if she wins.Speaking with the New Jersey Globe this morning, Sherrill homed in on three issues that she plans on making her top priorities as governor: lowering housing costs, improving public transit, and increasing transparency in a state known for its shady politics. And she said that unlike other politicians, who remained unnamed but who may include some of her opponents for the governor’s office, she’s committed to actually doing what needs to be done.“We know that for too many people, they just don’t feel like they have access to the opportunity in this state. It’s too hard to get ahead,” Sherrill said. “People are worried that their rights and freedoms are under attack. And so I think we need real leadership in Trenton – not just somebody who’s going to talk about the problem, but actually deliver.”Sherrill, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, was <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/congress/sherrill-wins/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">first elected</a> to represent the 11th congressional district in 2018, flipping a suburban North Jersey seat that had been held by Republicans for more than 30 years. We don’t want them moving out of the state. When our parents retire, we don’t want them headed to Delaware or Florida. We want them here. And those types of options just aren’t available in too many places in New Jersey.”Transit, too, is a key part of the congresswoman’s plan for the state.
