As a Sea King Helicopter pilot, she led missions throughout Europe and the Middle East. She worked on the Battle Watch Floor in the European Theater during the Iraq War, served as a Flag Aide to the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and was a Russian policy officer aiding in the implementation of our nuclear treaty obligations and oversaw the relationship between the U.S. Navy and Russian Federation Navy. <h3>Following her service in the Navy, Mikie attended and graduated from law school.</h3>She worked in private practice and then joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey. As an Outreach and Reentry Coordinator, Mikie established programs to develop trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve and helped people leaving prison to gain employment, housing, and education to restart their lives. Her campaign – where she drove an entrenched Republican incumbent out of the race – marked the biggest swing from red to blue in the country that year.&nbsp; <h3>As a mother raising four children, Mikie is a strong voice in Congress for New Jersey’s families.</h3>Mikie is working hard to bring down costs for families – whether it’s grocery prices, child care, or Trump’s SALT cap that punished New Jersey families. After constant roadblocks from the Christie and Trump administrations, Mikie helped deliver New Jersey’s fair share of federal funding on the Gateway Tunnel Project – the single-largest infrastructure project in American history, which will create good-paying union jobs and reduce commute times for families. She is fighting for reproductive freedom, defending abortion rights, as well as access to contraception and IVF. Let’s Get Big Things Done for New Jersey

In New Jersey, we pride ourselves on our quality public schools, our talented workforce, and some of the most innovative businesses in the world. But for too many families, our state is increasingly unaffordable, and it’s forced too many New Jerseyans to consider leaving home for another state. Since I was first elected, I’ve focused on making New Jersey a more affordable place for families by fighting for tax relief, lowering health care and energy costs, and cracking down on price gouging.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/05fcbbdf-a115-4bfe-91f4-200835f30713/cfc6abb9-279f-4880-9e09-eaffce113d4d/cfc6abb9-279f-4880-9e09-eaffce113d4d.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=123%2C0%2C1925%2C1152&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">Take the skyrocketing cost of groceries as an example. I have met with families across New Jersey, and I have heard time and time again that the high price of groceries is a critical concern. As a mom buying food for a family of six, including two teenage boys, I get it. In Congress, I introduced a bill that would provide incentives to small food retailers, helping them compete with big corporations and lower grocery prices. As governor, I will work to create a welcoming business environment for food retailers, increasing competition throughout our state, which will directly reduce grocery bills for families. I will continue to do more to reduce the cost of living so families can stay together right here in New Jersey. I will focus on making housing more available and more affordable, improving transparency and cutting costs in our health care sector, and expanding competition to prevent price gouging at the supermarket. From housing and grocery prices, to child care and health care, I will work constantly as your governor to bring down costs for families.

This housing affordability crisis impacts millions of New Jerseyans. It means that students can’t live where they grew up after graduating from college, that seniors can’t age in place or find a home near their children and grandchildren when they retire and are ready to downsize, and that businesses choose to set up shop in other states because their workforce can’t afford to live here. For most families, home ownership is the largest investment they will make and the best opportunity they will have to build generational wealth. But our current housing crisis and high property taxes mean many families may never get that opportunity.&nbsp; At the root of the problem is a severe housing shortage and a lack of supply at all levels. Since 2019, New Jersey has seen the second-largest decline in available housing inventory in the entire nation. That is not sustainable for families or our economy. We must revive New Jersey as a state that builds, leads, and innovates on housing.&nbsp; As governor, I am committed to improving housing affordability by increasing new home construction that meets the needs of all residents. More housing will expand opportunities for home ownership and help drive down rental costs as supply increases. I will work with our municipalities to expand “Missing Middle” housing that both grows our supply and works for our communities. I will work to provide financing and assistance to municipalities to help them repurpose underutilized infrastructure, like converting commercial buildings into housing units. By supporting new housing and redevelopment, municipalities can boost their tax base without burdening homeowners with higher rates. I will also strengthen first-time homebuyer programs to allow more New Jerseyans to build equity in the communities where they work and crack down on landlords who illegally discriminate against families and neglect to keep their properties in livable condition. Bringing down housing costs will unlock economic growth and help families keep more of their paychecks.

Housing

New Jersey is home to a world-class health care industry, but for many families, that comes with a staggering price tag. In Congress, I helped pass federal legislation that helped dramatically lower the cost of health care for seniors, including capping the cost of insulin at $35 a month — and capping senior's out-of-pocket prescription drug spending at $2,000 annually. New Jersey has taken the right steps, followed suit, and extended the Inflation Reduction Act's insulin cap to GetCoveredNJ, as well as public employee benefits plans. But we must do more, and as governor, I will direct the state to identify promising avenues for patient savings on prescription drugs.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/05fcbbdf-a115-4bfe-91f4-200835f30713/6ab94e97-13b0-441c-b7c2-974faf3428ef/6ab94e97-13b0-441c-b7c2-974faf3428ef.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C17%2C1916%2C1078&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">Simply receiving quality care should never break the bank. A critical piece to addressing skyrocketing costs is greater transparency in health care pricing. With all other major financial decisions, like buying a home, people know what they will be paying upfront. But in health care, patients often don't know the price tag until they receive the bill. For patients who have the ability to shop around for affordable care in advance, increased competition will bring prices down. Keeping health care costs under control will ensure everyone in New Jersey can access the care they need without falling into medical debt.

Since Trump’s handpicked Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, I’ve led the fight to protect women’s access to emergency abortion care, block efforts to ban medication abortion like mifepristone, and ensure military servicewomen have access to abortion and contraception, no matter where they are stationed. While New Jersey is a leader in reproductive freedom, I know that as governor, there is more we can do to ensure every woman has access to the reproductive health care she needs. Despite laws in place to protect access to care, too often women in New Jersey face additional barriers in getting care. New Jersey must take action to require comprehensive insurance coverage for all reproductive health care services, including abortion. I will continue our work expanding access to contraception and IVF services so that every New Jerseyan has affordable access to the family planning services they need. We will be the first line of defense in protecting reproductive rights.

The decision of if and when to start a family is one that every woman deserves to make for herself — and that’s why I have always fought for access to abortion and comprehensive reproductive health care.

Abortion and Reproductive Rights

Access to quality child care is a lifeline for families and strengthens our economy, but far too many parents either can't find care, or even when it is available, can't afford it. Some parents have to make the impossible choice of enrolling their child in a program that doesn’t fit their budget or leaving their job to care for them. This issue is personal to me as a mother of four — I remember when I was looking for child care and had to make that decision. I will work to bring down the cost of child care for families and allow parents the ability to rejoin the workforce or take on more hours at work, strengthening their family’s financial security.&nbsp;<img src="https://run.imgix.net/05fcbbdf-a115-4bfe-91f4-200835f30713/f8610a03-fb98-460a-aba5-6422a9b6085b/f8610a03-fb98-460a-aba5-6422a9b6085b.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C4897%2C3266&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed"> In Congress, I’ve tackled this issue head-on. I introduced legislation — modeled after the military and Head Start — that would cap a family's out-of-pocket costs for child care at 7 percent of their income and bolster the early childhood education workforce to ensure that every family can find and afford high-quality child care. I helped pass legislation that expanded the federal child tax credit, which lifted nearly three million children out of poverty. As governor, I will expand New Jersey’s child tax credit, which would reduce child poverty and help families afford child care — or anything else their family needs.&nbsp; Our local businesses feel the significant strain when their employees can't find reliable child care. I will work with New Jersey employers to establish support programs that enable them to offer the child care options their employees need. Affordable child care isn't just necessary for parents — it’s essential for employers and New Jersey’s economy.&nbsp;

But this isn’t true of every zip code, where we continue to see large disparities in educational opportunities — which leaves talent on the table despite efforts to close the achievement gap. A strong foundation starts with making early childhood education, pre-K, and kindergarten affordable and available in every corner of the state.&nbsp;<img src="https://run.imgix.net/05fcbbdf-a115-4bfe-91f4-200835f30713/e4e4d99b-bd26-4d85-85c9-bbbe67ced11f/03ea93d4-0729-4edb-878b-5d809977065d.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=25%2C721%2C3047%2C2009&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">Across New Jersey, students in every district continue to face post-pandemic struggles with mental health and learning loss. That’s why I fought to bring back federal funding to safely reopen schools and get kids back on track, including by introducing legislation to provide high-quality tutoring to students. As governor, we’ll expand on this progress by supporting effective programs — like high-impact tutoring — that address learning loss. We’ll address the mental health crisis by increasing the number of school counselors, psychologists, and mental health services in our schools. And as a mom of four, I know that kids learn better when their stomachs are full. I will make school meals available at no cost for every student in New Jersey because we know good nutrition is essential to academic achievement.&nbsp; As our students graduate high school and move on to college or their careers, we can better prepare them by creating stronger pathways between schools and the workforce. This includes offering more apprenticeships, working closely with employers and colleges, and expanding job training programs. Our union apprenticeship and job training programs turn out some of the best trades workers in the country, and we need to make sure they have what they need to empower the next generation of the high-skilled workforce. A high-quality education opens doors and provides New Jerseyans with the opportunity to forge their own path to success.

In New Jersey, transportation isn't just a policy — it's the backbone of our state. And right now, it's causing headaches for far too many of our neighbors. <img src="https://run.imgix.net/05fcbbdf-a115-4bfe-91f4-200835f30713/c9d78a35-29ef-41b1-a0f8-ff4f65817a66/c9d78a35-29ef-41b1-a0f8-ff4f65817a66.png?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C2048%2C1536&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">New Jersey commuters and families, including my own, have faced unacceptable delays, congestion, and service breakdowns on our transportation system that we rely on every day. Too many commuters have had the frustrating experience of waiting for a train or bus that never comes or arrives too late — leading to missed shifts, family occasions, and their kids' events. And on our highways, our patience is tested daily as we sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic.New Jersey needs affordable, accessible public transportation that our families and commuters can rely on. As governor, I will tackle congestion and our aging infrastructure by investing in mass transit while maintaining and upgrading our roads and rails.I have been a tireless advocate for improved service along the Northeast Corridor by demanding accountability from the federal government for service breakdowns caused by neglected Amtrak equipment so that New Jersey commuters don’t keep suffering from another “Summer from Hell” year after year.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/05fcbbdf-a115-4bfe-91f4-200835f30713/c56071b0-e613-485e-beaf-522f0a69bde4/c56071b0-e613-485e-beaf-522f0a69bde4.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C2048%2C1152&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">Since I arrived in Congress, I have been a staunch advocate for the Gateway Project to build new rail tunnels under the Hudson River — I’ve even been referred to as the “Tunnel Obsessed Congresswoman.” I successfully fought to bring our tax dollars back to New Jersey to fund the largest federal transit investment in U.S. history. This project will double train capacity between New Jersey and New York and create thousands of good-paying union jobs.Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, I brought back billions of federal dollars to repair New Jersey’s aging roads and bridges, and as governor, I’ll continue to make investments and improvements a top priority.For every one dollar spent on infrastructure, we generate five dollars in economic activity. That is a great return on investment and an economic driver for our state and region. The Northeast Corridor rail line touches 20 percent of the entire U.S. economy and goods from the Port of New York and New Jersey can reach about 50 percent of Americans within 36 hours. We cannot allow our infrastructure to hold back this economic engine, and greater access to this transit network will create key pathways to the middle class for New Jersey families.I will work with federal partners and New York to keep the Gateway Projects funded and on schedule and secure other investments that improve service and reliability. And NJ TRANSIT must have a customer-focused mindset, improving its communication with riders and making investments that create a better experience that gets people to work on time. A reliable, convenient, affordable, and accessible transit system is vital for New Jersey, will connect people to opportunity, and drive the innovation economy.

Transportation

Addressing New Jersey’s environmental needs — from the shore to marshes, forests, and farmland — requires a governor who can get big things done. We need urgent action to mitigate flooding, produce clean energy, remediate brownfields, clean up Superfund sites, and remove lead and forever chemicals from our drinking water. In Congress, I’ve fought for and successfully brought back millions of dollars to New Jersey to make our communities more flood resilient, replace lead service lines and water infrastructure, and take on environmental pollution. Stemming flooding and preserving our forests and farmlands grows jobs in industries across the state — from tourism to agriculture and beyond — and it increases savings for families through lower insurance premiums. I will pursue all-of-the-above clean energy investments — including wind and solar — that are critical for mitigating the devastating impacts of climate change as well as addressing high energy costs in the state. I will incentivize brownfields redevelopment to protect our environment and open up economic and housing opportunities. The climate crisis is real. And in New Jersey, addressing it isn’t a partisan issue — it’s an economic and public health issue that affects us all.

Addressing New Jersey’s environmental needs — from the shore to marshes, forests, and farmland — requires a governor who can get big things done. We need urgent action to mitigate flooding, produce clean energy, remediate brownfields, clean up Superfund sites, and remove lead and forever chemicals from our drinking water.

The Environment

All New Jerseyans have a fundamental right to grow up and live in a safe community. But for too many families, crime has become an all too familiar concern. As governor, I will be squarely focused on keeping our towns and cities safe.As a mom of four, I know the toll that the threat of gun violence continues to have on our kids and our communities. New Jersey has the seventh strongest gun laws in the nation and as a direct result of these policies, we have the fourth-lowest firearm death rate. In Congress, I introduced the SAFE NJ package to implement these strategies at the federal level — funding law enforcement initiatives to prevent auto theft, investing in jobs programs for young people, and expanding access to mental health and substance abuse treatment. As governor, I am committed to enacting these evidence-based programs in New Jersey and expanding innovative and proven programs like ARRIVE Together that prioritize mental health services and treatment while reducing use of force.We must also make sure that police officers have the support and resources they need to be successful. From updating 911 infrastructure to funding license plate readers to combat car theft, in Congress, I have worked closely with law enforcement leaders to provide our police departments the tools that officers require to serve our communities and keep us safe. And I will continue to do just that as governor.It is also critical that we invest in comprehensive reentry services for individuals in the criminal justice system. A conviction isn’t a life sentence, but we know that recidivism rates are too high. To meaningfully address this, we must ensure that individuals gain real skills, and we must strengthen mental health care and treatment while incarcerated so that they have real educational, housing, and employment opportunities when they reenter our communities. As governor, I want individuals returning to their communities to set positive examples of what it means to not be defined by our worst mistakes. Phil Murphy, she stands out as the only woman (earning her an <a href="https://mikiesherrill.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f1899c1a0d8e21a2f6dc70bf9&amp;id=2e4c2c46f9&amp;e=37c33a2605" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">endorsement from Emily’s List</a>) — and the one who exudes a healthy impatience with politicians “more focused on their own political agenda than actual public service.”</li><li>Her military and legal background have fostered a take-charge attitude. “If you’re going to deal with a crisis moment, you have to make decisions and you have to lead, you cannot sit idly by and hope it passes over,” she said. “Too many people in elected office” don’t want to “stick their head up.”</li><li>Sherrill said she prefers the approach learned in the Navy: “It’s just lead, follow or get out of the way. During a conversation I had with them in September, they sometimes finished each other’s sentences.And now, they have something else in common: The two women are strong contenders to be the next governors of Virginia and New Jersey. Their races in 2025 will show how well Democrats are heeding the lessons of 2024.Sherrill, 52, who remains a House member, announced her bid for governor on Monday. “Everyone here knows the opportunity that New Jersey affords, but nobody can afford New Jersey,” she told me. “Whether they’re making $50,000 year or $150,000 a year or more, it just feels like they’re not able to get ahead. They’re not able to get to stable ground. That’s why I’m running for governor, because I truly and deeply believe that well-run, efficient government can deliver for people.”Early polls suggest the only woman on either side in that race so far starts <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/2025/new-jersey/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">at or near </a>the front of the pack. Still, New Jersey politics are known for being wild, and Sherrill will be competing in a crowded primary to replace term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.Spanberger, 45, who did not seek reelection to her Virginia House seat, is proving such a formidable contender for governor that she faces no opposition in the Democratic primary.Her Republican opponent is all but certain to be Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, a Marine veteran whose <a href="https://x.com/WinsomeSears/status/1393669067458875393" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">2021 campaign posters</a> featured her holding an assault-style rifle. Which means that a commonwealth where past governors have included Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, but never a woman, will probably be choosing between two of them next year.The contests that Virginia and New Jersey hold the year after presidential elections have long been early indicators of how the political landscape is shifting ahead of the midterm elections. More often than not, they <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/10/31/1050563878/heres-why-the-other-48-states-care-whos-governor-of-virginia-and-new-jersey" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">swing against</a> the president’s party.But these two races might also validate a broader movement in the electorate: This year, Vice President <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/kamala-harris/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kamala Harris</a> carried both Virginia and New Jersey, as expected, but her margins over <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/donald-trump/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Donald Trump</a> were only about half what Joe Biden’s had been four years before.Spanberger certainly seems to understand voters’ volatile mood. “I’m going to continue talking about the things I hear most about from voters, and that’s, frankly, lowering costs. It’s strengthening our public schools. It’s keeping our communities safe. It’s protecting our rights, particularly in Virginia, the last state in the South that hasn’t seen further restrictions on abortion rights since Dobbs,” she said, referring to the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.But a new set of concerns might matter in a purplish state that is home to vast numbers of federal workers and contractors who could be decimated by Trump’s plan for a top-to-bottom overhaul of Washington. “I will, both as a candidate and ultimately as a governor, have to be able to respond along the way to ensure that Virginia is doing everything to protect people, their livelihood, our economy and their health,” Spanberger said.When Sherrill and Spanberger arrived in Washington in 2019, each rented an apartment on the same floor of a building near the Capitol.“Some people seem to have fun in Congress. Speaking for both of us, while we’re here, we’re away from our families. We just work from the time we get up to the time we go to bed, and it’s meeting, meeting, meeting,” Spanberger said.What’s more, she added, it was lonely to begin and end each day in a rented apartment where “the only sound is your own.”So they asked one another: Why not move in together?The apartment they have shared Mondays through Thursdays when Congress is in session was no palace when they moved in. They sat on a stained 20-year-old living room couch that Spanberger dragged out of storage. Dinners together were eaten off Sherrill’s gold-rimmed wedding china, which — inconveniently — couldn’t go in the microwave.To occupy what little free time they had, they drank a lot of coffee, occasionally took a sauna and resolved to make more visits to the gym. The mention of that last one brought a burst of laughter. “Aspirational,” both of them admitted.Discovering how the House operated — and didn’t — quickly became a source of shared frustration. The 116th U.S. Congress had an unusually large number of freshmen, <a href="https://csis-website-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/NewPerspectives_APRIL2019_Marshall.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">19 in all</a>, who came to the job with backgrounds in national security. They had won in districts where Democrats typically didn’t, and, it was hoped, they would be an antidote to partisanship and gridlock. Five of them were women, who christened themselves “<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/28/politics/badass-women-impeachment-democrats-oped/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">the Badasses</a>.”“All of us were sort of predisposed to working together on a mission,” Sherrill said. “In the military, you’re not like, oh, are you a Democrat or Republican? Or did you come from New Jersey or from Alabama? You work with people from all over the country, all different backgrounds, but you all share the mission focus.”Congress, however, was not built that way. It moves slowly, when it moves at all, and members rarely step outside their partisan and ideological lanes. “We were like, ‘What’s the strategy? Where’s the strategy?’” Spanberger said. “There’s just an urgency problem: What’s the problem? Identify the problem. What are the risks? How do we move? Let’s move."When they stood together, though, they could get results. It was their voices in September 2019 that led to Trump’s first impeachment. The issue was the president’s attempt to coerce Ukraine’s newly elected leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, into investigating Joe Biden by holding back nearly $400 million in military aid to the country.Trump had been accused of other misdeeds. But the moderate, national security-minded freshmen hadn’t been convinced that those uncovered in special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election rose to the Constitution’s “high crimes and misdemeanors” standard for impeachment.To them, refusing badly needed weapons to Ukraine clearly did. “We saw he was withholding those because he wanted Zelensky to dig up and manufacture evidence against Biden, who he thought was going to be his opponent in a democratic election. Finally, we all said that is a bright line,” Sherrill recalled.The Badasses, plus two of their male freshman colleagues, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/09/24/seven-freshman-democrats-these-allegations-are-threat-all-we-have-sworn-protect/?itid=lk_inline_manual_31" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">wrote a powerful Post op-ed</a>, in which they argued: “We have devoted our lives to the service and security of our country, and throughout our careers, we have sworn oaths to defend the Constitution of the United States many times over. Now, we join as a unified group to uphold that oath as we enter uncharted waters and face unprecedented allegations against President Trump.”More-progressive House members representing safe districts had already been arguing to impeach Trump. That these seven freshmen were willing to put their political careers on the line and join them persuaded then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (California) to end her own resistance to taking such a dramatic step against a sitting president. Within 24 hours of their op-ed being published, Pelosi announced the opening of an official <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/09/12/biden-impeachment-inquiry-meaning/?itid=lk_inline_manual_32" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">impeachment inquiry</a> against Trump.What they saw nationally and what they experienced within their own families during the covid-19 pandemic brought another turning point for Spanberger and Sherrill, convincing both they could make a bigger difference by returning to their home states.Densely populated New Jersey was one of the <a href="https://www.nj.gov/sci/pdf/Pandemic%20Report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">earliest and hardest-hit states</a>, Sherrill noted. Congress did vital work during the pandemic, she said, providing money “to keep people connected to their small businesses and to keep people employed and to keep people getting paychecks to be able to buy food.”“But it wasn’t the same as delivering PPE gear to hospitals or being able to institute the Defense Production Act and get the manufacturing base engaged in a crisis to deliver for people. It wasn’t the power that an executive would have in that instance,” she explained. “Seeing what governors across the country have been doing, and how Washington has become so partisan and toxic ... I just feel that often the future of how we really deliver for people, or the effectiveness of how we can deliver for people, resides in these governors across the country.”The two women also felt the impact as mothers whose children — Sherrill has four; Spanberger has three — are still showing the effects of school shutdowns. They told me about their anxieties for a daughter who spent kindergarten and first grade in front of a computer screen and still hasn’t learned to read as she should; the middle-schooler who doesn’t want to have friends over. They recalled the sheer ridiculousness of watching a son put together empty paper towel rolls and call it an art project. And theirs, they stressed, are kids who have had every privilege.“I don’t think people without school-age kids understand what covid has done to our children,” Sherrill said. “A lot of us lost all ability to monitor screen time in our children because their entire life was online. And now we come out of the other side of covid, and we’re having a second trauma of all of the algorithms and what kids are seeing online and all of their social media profiles.”Still, for all the advantages Spanberger and Sherrill have, winning executive office has always been a harder lift for female candidates than winning legislative office. <a href="https://barbaraleefoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/Ready-Willing-Electable-2019-Barbara-Lee-Family-Foundation.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Research has shown</a> voters are more willing to accept women in collaborative roles than as the chief decider. For many disappointed Democrats, Harris’s defeat only confirmed it.But the good news is, there are a dozen women — a record — serving as governors.Barring a surprise, Virginia will add to that number, and the fact that the leading candidates for both parties there are female, Spanberger knows, will be both thrilling and a political challenge in itself. “What’s going to be interesting is, I do think that there will be much made of the fact that it’s two women, and one of them will be the first woman governor in Virginia,” she said. “It will be incumbent upon me to make sure that people are clear-eyed about what the actual policy differences are.”Garden State politics, meanwhile, have traditionally run on <a href="https://cawp.rutgers.edu/facts/new-jersey-facts/data-diversity-nj-elected/findings" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">testosterone and cronyism</a>. Its only female governor was a Republican, Christine Todd Whitman.“I’d say that after serving in the military for years, especially at a time when women serving in the military was somewhat unusual and they were breaking through barriers — that kind of grit and determination, I think, has served me well as I’ve entered into the rough-and-tumble world of New Jersey politics,” Sherrill said.There is a lot of despair, in the wake of their 2024 defeat up and down the ballot, that Democrats have lost their way. But the thing about elections is, there’s always another one on the horizon. Coming back will require a new model of leadership. Which is why these two roommates are worth watching.

Mikie Qualifies for Matching Funds with $600K Fundraising Haul After First Day in Governor's Race

Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) has at last <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/governor/mikie-sherrill-enters-race-for-democratic-gubernatorial-nomination/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">entered the 2025 race</a> for governor of New Jersey. She says she has a clear plan for what she wants to do if she wins.Speaking with the New Jersey Globe this morning, Sherrill homed in on three issues that she plans on making her top priorities as governor: lowering housing costs, improving public transit, and increasing transparency in a state known for its shady politics. And she said that unlike other politicians, who remained unnamed but who may include some of her opponents for the governor’s office, she’s committed to actually doing what needs to be done.“We know that for too many people, they just don’t feel like they have access to the opportunity in this state. It’s too hard to get ahead,” Sherrill said. “People are worried that their rights and freedoms are under attack. And so I think we need real leadership in Trenton – not just somebody who’s going to talk about the problem, but actually deliver.”Sherrill, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, was <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/congress/sherrill-wins/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">first elected</a> to represent the 11th congressional district in 2018, flipping a suburban North Jersey seat that had been held by Republicans for more than 30 years. Her victory that year was one of four Democratic flips in New Jersey that helped Democrats retake control of the House.In the six years since then, Sherrill has established a record as a moderate Democrat with a particular focus on abortion rights and national security. But as she seeks to lead a state that already has strong abortion protections in place and where many voters care more about affordability problems than about international politics, the issues driving her gubernatorial campaign look a bit different.The first policy priority Sherrill identified was housing, which she said is too expensive for many New Jerseyans and is pushing both younger and older people out of the state. While New Jersey in theory has <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/13/headway/mount-laurel-nj-affordable-housing.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">strong affordable housing requirements</a> thanks to the state Supreme Court, Sherrill said that the state needs to work on building “missing middle” housing for the middle class, repurposing office spaces and brownfields and incentivizing developers to build more than just luxury apartments.“People like me, with kids, we want our kids moving back here,” she said. “When our kids are ready to start their family, we want them to be able to afford homes nearby. We don’t want them moving out of the state. When our parents retire, we don’t want them headed to Delaware or Florida. We want them here. And those types of options just aren’t available in too many places in New Jersey.”Transit, too, is a key part of the congresswoman’s plan for the state. Sherrill has frequently dubbed herself the <a href="https://x.com/RepSherrill/status/1841147882549751873" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">“tunnel-obsessed congresswoman,”</a> referencing the Gateway Tunnel project that should make train service in and out of New York City much smoother once it’s completed, and she said that she’ll be just as obsessed with fixing New Jersey Transit, which has <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/27/nyregion/nj-transit-amtrak-delays.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">been through a rough year</a> thanks to funding gaps and broader Amtrak issues.Asked how she would work to fix the struggling agency – a task which has eluded current Gov. Phil Murphy and many governors before him – Sherrill said it would take a combination of better allocation of resources in New Jersey and more money coming in from Washington.“We’ve got a $56 billion budget; we have got to take a look at that and make sure that we are spending money wisely on those things that are going to make life easier for families here,” she said. “But some of this has to be federally funded. When you look at the fact that the Amtrak rail line, which New Jersey Transit rents from Amtrak, has been under-maintained for years now – we need federal dollars in there.”Sherrill’s emphasis on transit and housing puts her in league with Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, another 2025 candidate who has made those issues a <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/governor/fulop-wants-to-double-affordable-housing-in-n-j/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">centerpiece of his policy-heavy campaign</a>. Sherrill’s colleague, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly), has also <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/campaigns/gottheimer-launches-bid-for-governor/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">focused strongly on affordability</a>, though his immediate priorities (lowering taxes and clawing back the money New Jersey sends to the federal government) look a bit different.Asked whether there was anything where she specifically disagreed with the current administration in Trenton, Sherrill said that she believed the state has not done enough to foster transparency and increase voters’ trust in government. She cited the Elections Transparency Act, a <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/legislature/murphy-signs-controversial-elections-transparency-act-into-law/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">controversial campaign finance overhaul</a> from 2023, and an <a href="https://newjerseymonitor.com/2024/06/05/gov-murphy-signs-bill-revamping-public-records-law-in-blow-to-transparency-advocates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">even more controversial 2024 bill</a> that weakened some parts of the Open Public Records Act, both of which were signed into law by Murphy.“We’ve had a series of corruption scandals,” Sherrill said. “Our state is sadly somewhat known for that in certain quarters. So voters have demanded, and the people of New Jersey deserve, transparency and accountability. I would disagree with certain measures that have been taken to undermine some of those ways in which we provide that to people.”Sherrill is, in some ways, an unlikely messenger for that fight. She is closely entwined with many of the Democratic leaders who were instrumental in pushing for the bills she’s criticized; the leader of the state Democratic Party, Essex County Democratic Chair LeRoy Jones, is <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/governor/middlesex-essex-passaic-appear-ready-to-back-sherrill-in-25/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">preparing to support</a> her campaign for governor.But Sherrill said that no matter who is backing her, she’ll always answer to the voters of New Jersey first and foremost.“The number one group that I want to get support from is the people of New Jersey,” she said. “I really want voters to support this campaign because they believe in what I’m doing. Mikie Sherrill wants to be the transit, housing, and transparency-obsessed governor

EMILY’s List, a national group that backs Democratic women running for office, endorsed Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s bid for New Jersey governor on Monday, just hours after she announced her campaign.In a statement shared first with NBC News, EMILY’s List President Jessica Mackler highlighted Sherrill’s military service and her time in Congress, adding that the group hopes she’ll become the first Democratic woman to serve as governor in the Garden State.“In the United States Navy and in Congress, Rep. Sherrill has shown her unwavering commitment to serving our country and the people of New Jersey. Mikie Sherrill says she’s ready for action: On Monday, she <a href="https://www.nj.com/politics/2024/11/congresswoman-joins-raucous-nj-governors-race-to-take-over-for-murphy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">officially declared her candidacy</a> for governor.She jumped into a pileup of candidates to succeed Phil Murphy, who is term limited. Her Democratic rivals include Rep. Josh Gottheimer, former Senate President Stephen Sweeney, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Sean Spiller, head of the state’s largest teacher’s union.Sherrill, a former pilot and federal prosecutor, has served in the House since 2018, when she flipped a red district that hadn’t voted for a Democrat since 1982. Now, in a packed field for governor, she’s the only woman running. Hours after announcing, she spoke with the editorial board about this latest mission. Below is a transcript, edited for brevity.Q. This is a crowded field for Democrats. What sets you apart?I bring a fresh perspective. I come from a background of service, from when I first started at the Naval Academy to when, by my early 20s, I was leading men and women in a helicopter squadron and missions around the world. This is what the military trains you for: To bring a diverse group of people together from all over the nation around a common goal.I think that’s something that I’ve been able to bring to bear. I was told I couldn’t win my race in the 11th district of New Jersey when I ran in 2018, and really brought everyone together around those issues we all cared about and was able to have the largest swing from red to blue in the entire nation in that cycle, with a lot of seats flipping.Then I was told that as a freshman member of Congress, I wouldn’t be able to get anything done and it would take a long time. And by my second term, I was named the most effective legislator in the House delegation by the Center for Effective Lawmaking. And despite the fact that we saw losses in a lot of the state in the recent election, in my district – even Morris County, the more traditionally Republican part – not only did we hold on to all the seats, but we were actually able to pick up a few more.Q. You say we need to make life more affordable for New Jerseyans. How would you do that? Any ideas on the cost of housing, for example?If you want to know what I would do in Trenton, take a look at my record, whether it’s getting fixes for the state and local tax deduction cap through the House twice, addressing grocery prices with a “Shrinkflation” bill, but also a bill to add competition into grocery stores and drive prices down; legislation to make sure no one pays more than 7% of their income on childcare, or the most recent legislation I’m working on to get federal funding to convert office parks or brownfield spaces to housing spaces, so we can address the housing shortage in our state.Q. Do you think it’s possible to contain property taxes without taking on the public worker unions and cutting benefits for folks like cops and teachers, which are largely driving the increases?Yeah. I think you’ve got to look at what we can do. I was just talking to one of the mayors in my district about the fact that all the firehouses have private mechanics that are hugely expensive for all their fire trucks, and couldn’t they share services? It’s looking for opportunities where we can drive costs down without cutting wages, through programs towns want to opt into to continue to have those things they most care about.Q. Just on cuts to benefits: Is that something that you would look at?You know, we have to make sure people who work hard have benefits at the end of their life. One of the things that was so impactful to my family is the fact that after they lost everything in the Great Depression, my grandfather went to fight in the war and then came home and got a good union job. He never made tons of money. My mom grew up in a very modest household. But at the end of his life, they had benefits, and when he and my grandma got sick, it didn’t bankrupt my family.Q. The governor famously promised to fix NJ Transit even if it kills him. And by most accounts, he failed. As governor, what will you do differently?I’ve already been working hard on that. This is a critical issue. I know this personally because my husband commutes almost every day, and I was commuting when my kids were little — that gut-churning anxiety you feel when you’re trying to get your kid at daycare, the scramble when somebody is late from work or can’t do pick up or drop off. This is the kind of upending of family life, quality of life, that people are experiencing. We’ve got to do more. And so I’ve been talking to NJ Transit, I’ve been talking to Amtrak. Over time Amtrak has just not been able to maintain the rail. They haven’t had enough resources from the federal government. We’ve got to push in there. That’s why I led the delegation advocating for federal funding for upgrades. Secretary Buttigieg just called to tell me that would be coming through, so now we have to apply for that grant money. The good news is, we have a long-term solution: The Gateway tunnel project is going to be a monumental change. The bad news is, it’s not going to be here next summer. So what are we going do in the meantime to make sure commuters have a much better experience?Q. Should the new money raised for New Jersey Transit’s operations – the corporate transit fee – be permanent and dedicated to NJT? Would you extend it after it sunsets in five years?Well first of all, that money has to go to New Jersey Transit. And the first year it did not, actually. The transit fee hasn’t actually gone to transit. So, I think it has to go to transit. I’d be happy to take a look.Q. Switching topics, what do you think Kamala Harris’ tight win in New Jersey means? Is there a lesson here for the governor’s race? In our last gubernatorial race, Republicans nearly pulled off an upset.I think the reason we held every seat in my district and even picked up a couple is because I’ve worked incredibly hard to maintain communications with people there, to constantly be checking in and figuring out, what is it that I can do and deliver to make life better? Whether it’s money for flooding, for innovation through the House Armed Services bill or to address PFAS, which are forever chemicals; or making sure we’re addressing car theft through driving money into the district for license plate readers – this stuff all comes directly from people in my district. Because of that, I think I saw really good results in this election, and can see really good results around the state.Q. You say you want New Jersey to set the “gold standard” for protecting rights and freedoms threatened by Donald Trump. What rights do you think we need to solidify and how would you do that?Obviously, we start with reproductive rights. But beyond that I’m worried about so much more. Trump has said he’s going to court martial admirals and generals because I think he wants to replace them with loyalists so he can co-opt the military. I worry about the Secretary of Defense pick he has, because that person has said that basically women shouldn’t be serving in many roles in our military, and I have a daughter in the military right now, and I know how hard-fought the gains women have made there have been. And I also know how effective the leadership of women has been, and how necessary when we’re fighting in places across the world and trying to win hearts and minds as we move forward on our goals. So, these things are all going to be critically important. And we’re continuing to see the attacks that Trump is envisioning from Washington. So, it’s about making sure people have this kind of access, that people are protected here. Democratic governors are going to be so key in this fight, and you can already see many coming up with a plan of action – especially those who were in office, as I was, in Trump’s last presidency.Q. Any specific things NJ can do, that you’d focus on as governor?Trenton initially took action to protect some of the early concerns we had when Roe was overturned. We need to continue to move forward on things like IVF, and making sure the way payment is structured for women seeking reproductive healthcare is more fair and equitable. The state also needs to start stockpiling some of the abortion medication, because I’m worried that if the Project 2025 plan comes to light, you’re going to see use of the Comstock Act in trying to prevent the mailing of some abortion pills. We also need to make sure we support reproductive health in our state constitution and embed it there. And we need to take a hard look at how we can, through our constitution and legislation, really protect freedoms we’re seeing coming under attack. As we see what type of things are coming from Washington, we need to be very ready to act in protection of people in the state of New Jersey.
