She worked on the Battle Watch Floor in the European Theater during the Iraq War, served as a Flag Aide to the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and was a Russian policy officer aiding in the implementation of our nuclear treaty obligations and oversaw the relationship between the U.S. Navy and Russian Federation Navy. <h3>Following her service in the Navy, Mikie attended and graduated from law school.</h3>She worked in private practice and then joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey. As an Outreach and Reentry Coordinator, Mikie established programs to develop trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve and helped people leaving prison to gain employment, housing, and education to restart their lives. Then as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, she prosecuted federal cases to keep our communities safe and worked to take illegal guns off the streets of New Jersey. <h3>After Donald Trump was first elected, Mikie knew she had to do something to stand up for New Jersey, her country, and the values she swore an oath to defend in the Navy.</h3><img src="https://run.imgix.net/05fcbbdf-a115-4bfe-91f4-200835f30713/c5670c06-8830-4ba2-9131-7fd4ef7ee86c/c5670c06-8830-4ba2-9131-7fd4ef7ee86c.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C3386%2C1846&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" tiltdirection="left" variant="framed">In her first-ever run for office, she led a grassroots movement and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 to represent New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. After constant roadblocks from the Christie and Trump administrations, Mikie helped deliver New Jersey’s fair share of federal funding on the Gateway Tunnel Project – the single-largest infrastructure project in American history, which will create good-paying union jobs and reduce commute times for families. However, many of the platforms we use have intentionally designed algorithms and other features to be addictive for both children and adults, keeping us engaged by amplifying content that fuels our anxiety and anger. This has played a major role in our youth mental health crisis and the significant increase in depression and self-harm among young people in recent years. For example, a recent study found that young people who spend more than three hours daily on social media have significantly higher risks of developing mental health problems, while Gallup polling has found that teens with the highest social media usage have the worst self-reported mental health. These algorithms have also helped to deepen political divides and political extremism, by boosting misinformation and echo chambers in our democracy. Without proper safeguards, AI and other new technologies could exacerbate these issues—posing risks to parents concerned about their children’s well-being, workers striving to maintain good-paying and dignified jobs to support their families, and anyone seeking truth in a world increasingly plagued by deep fakes and misinformation.&nbsp; With the Trump administration pushing for even less oversight of Big Tech, New Jersey must step up to protect our children, workers, and democracy, and ensure that technology serves people, not the other way around. We can be leaders in innovation while also prioritizing the responsible and ethical development of new technologies and AI. By promoting fairness, transparency, and accountability, we can prevent bias, safeguard human rights, and ensure that technology advances in a way that benefits society as a whole. PROTECT CHILDREN ONLINE As every parent knows, social media can have a devastating impact on our children — from promoting poor sleep habits to increasing loneliness, anxiety, and depression. At its worst, it has become a haven for cyberbullying and for glorifying substance abuse, sexual exploitation, eating disorders, and even suicide. As Governor, I’ll hold Big Tech companies accountable for the harm they’re inflicting on New Jersey’s young people and families. Together, we can:<ul><li>Enact an Age Appropriate Design Code that would require social media companies to prioritize the health, privacy, and safety of users under 16 and would prevent Big Tech from deploying deceptive design tricks, known as “dark patterns” and “nudges,” that are used in apps, websites, and software to manipulate you into doing things you might not want to do—like signing up for a subscription, sharing personal data, or spending more money. We should also ban ads targeted at children, and restrict the collection of their personal data.</li><li>Require warning labels to appear on all social media noting that it is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents — an idea embraced by the previous administration's Surgeon General and a bipartisan coalition of 42 state attorneys general last year.</li><li>Create a first-of-its-kind Social Media Addiction Observatory within a New Jersey higher education institution – similar to the creation of the New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center at Rutgers – that can bring together public health experts, public interest technology researchers, parents, and the private sector to share data and expertise, and develop recommendations for promoting safer online experiences.</li><li>Ban the usage of cell phones and other personal connected devices during class time in our public schools, so children can spend more time focusing on interactions with each other and with their teachers.</li><li>Direct the Commissioner of Education to engage experts to create a new curriculum focused on teaching students to ethically and responsibly use big tech, including social media and AI in their school work and daily lives. Technology that is created, deployed, and used in a responsible and ethical manner can benefit our students and schools.</li><li>Develop a public awareness campaign in New Jersey communities and schools to help parents understand best practices for keeping their children safe online, including information on the safest ages for children to become active on social media and how to identify online harassment or bullying. &nbsp;</li></ul>FIGHT EXTREMISM AND BRING OUR COUNTRY BACK TOGETHER Growing political extremism, along with the rise of hateful ideologies and bigotry, is no coincidence. Social media platforms, bolstered by AI, are intentionally designed to amplify our biases and fuel outrage. By engaging users in this way, Big Tech maximizes profits through increased engagement, views, and screen time. Unless the design of these systems changes, algorithms will continue to prioritize sensationalism, accelerate the spread of misinformation, and push vulnerable individuals toward violence. As Governor, I’ll fight the extremism that is tearing New Jersey families and our democracy apart. Together, we can:<ul><li>Hold social media platforms liable for algorithms that amplify extremist and terrorist content, and that cause extreme harm to children.</li><li>Require companies to be transparent about how they design and apply their algorithms so social media users can better understand why certain content is prioritized.</li><li>Reinvest in local journalism to rebuild trust in the news, boost civic participation, and root out corruption, by increasing funding for New Jersey’s Civic Information Consortium, creating tax incentives for small businesses to advertise in local newspapers, and requiring social media companies to better compensate news publishers for their content.</li></ul> HOLD SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES ACCOUNTABLE FOR SCAMS New Jersey residents reported losing more than $250 million to scams last year — money that could have gone toward a new car, a downpayment on a home, or putting food on the table. These scammers, who often reside abroad, exploit our weak data privacy laws to target seniors, veterans, and immigrants with paid ads on social media. In this system, scammers and social media companies make millions while New Jersey families can lose their life savings. As Governor, I’ll strengthen privacy protections and hold social media companies accountable for enabling scammers to exploit New Jersey families. Together, we can:<ul><li>Prosecute social media companies that host scam networks and allow scammers to run paid ads targeting New Jersey families, and increase criminal penalties for scammers who target New Jerseyans.</li><li>Require social media companies to screen advertisers on their platforms and ensure that all advertisements are backed by a legitimate business or person. A real identifiable human being should be responsible for all content that is pushed out to users. If a social media platform cannot tell you who is behind an advertisement, then the social media platform should assume all liability for any harm caused by that advertisement.</li><li>Empower New Jersey residents to control what information is collected about them, how it is used, and who it is shared with, and give them the ability to delete the troves of their personal data collected by data brokers. Businesses should be required to tell us exactly what they intend to do with our data and give us meaningful choices before we share it. And to ensure compliance, there should be direct legal recourse when sensitive data is put at risk by data brokers and New Jerseyans should be able to request an injunction on the use and sharing of their data.</li></ul> ENSURE SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE&nbsp; As the 2023 federal Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence states: “Responsible AI use has the potential to help solve urgent challenges while making our world more prosperous, productive, innovative, and secure. At the same time, irresponsible use could exacerbate societal harms such as fraud, discrimination, bias, and disinformation; displace and disempower workers; stifle competition; and pose risks to national security.” Yet the Trump administration has threatened to repeal our existing national safeguards against AI misuse. It thus falls to New Jersey and other states to ensure that we get the benefits of this new technology without the deep fakes, discrimination, and displacement of workers that unregulated AI can bring. As Governor, I’ll fight to ensure that AI serves and empowers people, not just the billionaires who want to profit from it. Together, we can:<ul><li>Require developers of AI products to offer users detection tools and to label AI-generated content so that when we see something created by AI, we will know that it is artificially generated.</li><li>Enact legislation to expand the scope of existing child pornography laws, as well as existing privacy laws surrounding non-consensual sharing of images, to include content that is digitally altered or generated by AI systems.</li><li>Enact legislation to require social media platforms to establish reporting tools for users to report cases of sexually explicit digital identity theft.</li><li>Enact legislation that mandates clear disclosures on political ads generated or significantly altered by AI, aiming to prevent undisclosed AI use that could mislead voters.</li><li>Enact a package of legislation ensuring that healthcare decisions, including final decisions regarding medical necessity in health insurance utilization reviews, are conducted with a human-in-the-loop.</li><li>Support writers, artists, and content creators who are organizing to prevent AI companies from stealing and monetizing their work without consent or compensation.</li></ul>###

New Jersey has the seventh strongest gun laws in the nation and as a direct result of these policies, we have the fourth-lowest firearm death rate. She won in townships with a large Latino population, including Belleville, Dover, Vineland, Victory Gardens, Perth Amboy, Union City, and West New York. And while press coverage pushed a narrative that there were only two candidates competing for the progressive voter, Mikie won progressive strongholds including Maplewood, Westfield, Cranford, Somerville, Manchester, and Ridgewood.&nbsp; Mikie dominated up and down New Jersey. She is currently winning in a staggering 15 of 21 counties statewide, many of which she did not have support from the county Democratic Party. In Morris County — a formerly red county that Mikie has won and made competitive for Democrats — she won 62 percent of the vote and counting. Chris Christie won twice and Gov. Phil Murphy lost in the 2017 general election. Mikie also outperformed the presidential ticket in 2020 and 2024 in Morris County.&nbsp; Then take a look at Camden County in South Jersey — a Sweeney stronghold — where Mikie is leading with more than 99 percent of the vote counted. She did not have county party support in Camden, but she did have a message and vision that moved voters, and that was the case in other counties in South Jersey where Mikie won like Cape May, Atlantic, Burlington, and Ocean.&nbsp; Mikie Sherrill also overperformed Murphy’s 2017 statewide primary vote total. She currently has 270,457 votes and counting, while Murphy received 243,643 votes in the 2017 primary.&nbsp; Simply put: Mikie handily won in North, Central, and South Jersey. There was no area of New Jersey where Mikie did not have an incredibly strong showing.&nbsp; III. A Disciplined Campaign from a Battle-Tested Candidate&nbsp; Our campaign ran the most disciplined operation in the field with an aggressive strategy to reach voters, overcoming a significant money disadvantage and false attacks.&nbsp; From day one, spending discipline was a priority for the campaign, given the significant resources of our opponents. While our opponents dropped over $40 million before we spent a dollar on paid communication, and some started their paid media campaigns extremely early, our team decided to hold our resources until voters started to pay more attention to the primary. Also, the chaos coming from Washington and Trump’s second term was loud and distracting; we knew that any attempt to break through early would be a miscalculation. When we hit go, we launched a full-on paid media campaign across both the New York and Philadelphia media markets to English and Spanish-speaking voters. Our strategy resulted in a 2:1 spending advantage over any other candidate in the final week of the campaign — which also translated into a 2:1 turnout advantage over the Republican field on Election Day.&nbsp; While we conserved our paid communications resources, we started immediately from launch day to build the grassroots volunteer network that has been the hallmark of Mikie Sherrill campaigns. We competed in every open county convention, earning votes and support from hard-working local Democrats who are in touch with their communities. Republicans have their sights set on Jersey, with their Trump-endorsed, two-time loser candidate Jack Ciattarelli. That’s why a dark money GOP group spent undisclosed sums and targeted Mikie with false attacks during the primary, because at the end of the day, a Mikie Sherrill candidacy in the general election was their worst fear, now realized.&nbsp; And they should be afraid. Mikie is prepared to take on Jack Ciattarelli, stand up to Trump’s Washington, and deliver on her vision for change. While Jack bills himself as a small business owner, the real story is much more grim: He made millions while peddling misinformation about opioid addiction into our communities, helping fuel a drug epidemic that has devastated New Jersey families. His record as a career politician is also deeply flawed: with taxes going up at every level of government at which he’s served, voting against Superstorm Sandy relief, and defunding Planned Parenthood. Jack won’t stand up to Trump even when he attacks our rights or Social Security and Medicare — in fact, he’s pledged to never sue the Trump administration over illegal executive orders, and couldn’t name a single issue on which he and Trump disagreed. Jack makes big promises on the campaign trail, but the reality is that he has never been with us, and he never will be.&nbsp; There is a narrative that after two Democratic terms, Republicans are poised to take the governor’s office. Sherrill Outlines Plan to Lower Food Costs at C-Town in Perth Amboy

Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) has at last <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/governor/mikie-sherrill-enters-race-for-democratic-gubernatorial-nomination/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">entered the 2025 race</a> for governor of New Jersey. She says she has a clear plan for what she wants to do if she wins.Speaking with the New Jersey Globe this morning, Sherrill homed in on three issues that she plans on making her top priorities as governor: lowering housing costs, improving public transit, and increasing transparency in a state known for its shady politics. And she said that unlike other politicians, who remained unnamed but who may include some of her opponents for the governor’s office, she’s committed to actually doing what needs to be done.“We know that for too many people, they just don’t feel like they have access to the opportunity in this state. It’s too hard to get ahead,” Sherrill said. “People are worried that their rights and freedoms are under attack. And so I think we need real leadership in Trenton – not just somebody who’s going to talk about the problem, but actually deliver.”Sherrill, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, was <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/congress/sherrill-wins/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">first elected</a> to represent the 11th congressional district in 2018, flipping a suburban North Jersey seat that had been held by Republicans for more than 30 years. Her victory that year was one of four Democratic flips in New Jersey that helped Democrats retake control of the House.In the six years since then, Sherrill has established a record as a moderate Democrat with a particular focus on abortion rights and national security. But as she seeks to lead a state that already has strong abortion protections in place and where many voters care more about affordability problems than about international politics, the issues driving her gubernatorial campaign look a bit different.The first policy priority Sherrill identified was housing, which she said is too expensive for many New Jerseyans and is pushing both younger and older people out of the state. While New Jersey in theory has <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/13/headway/mount-laurel-nj-affordable-housing.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">strong affordable housing requirements</a> thanks to the state Supreme Court, Sherrill said that the state needs to work on building “missing middle” housing for the middle class, repurposing office spaces and brownfields and incentivizing developers to build more than just luxury apartments.“People like me, with kids, we want our kids moving back here,” she said. “When our kids are ready to start their family, we want them to be able to afford homes nearby. We don’t want them moving out of the state. When our parents retire, we don’t want them headed to Delaware or Florida. We want them here. And those types of options just aren’t available in too many places in New Jersey.”Transit, too, is a key part of the congresswoman’s plan for the state. Sherrill has frequently dubbed herself the <a href="https://x.com/RepSherrill/status/1841147882549751873" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">“tunnel-obsessed congresswoman,”</a> referencing the Gateway Tunnel project that should make train service in and out of New York City much smoother once it’s completed, and she said that she’ll be just as obsessed with fixing New Jersey Transit, which has <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/27/nyregion/nj-transit-amtrak-delays.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">been through a rough year</a> thanks to funding gaps and broader Amtrak issues.Asked how she would work to fix the struggling agency – a task which has eluded current Gov. Phil Murphy and many governors before him – Sherrill said it would take a combination of better allocation of resources in New Jersey and more money coming in from Washington.“We’ve got a $56 billion budget; we have got to take a look at that and make sure that we are spending money wisely on those things that are going to make life easier for families here,” she said. “But some of this has to be federally funded. When you look at the fact that the Amtrak rail line, which New Jersey Transit rents from Amtrak, has been under-maintained for years now – we need federal dollars in there.”Sherrill’s emphasis on transit and housing puts her in league with Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, another 2025 candidate who has made those issues a <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/governor/fulop-wants-to-double-affordable-housing-in-n-j/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">centerpiece of his policy-heavy campaign</a>. Sherrill’s colleague, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly), has also <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/campaigns/gottheimer-launches-bid-for-governor/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">focused strongly on affordability</a>, though his immediate priorities (lowering taxes and clawing back the money New Jersey sends to the federal government) look a bit different.Asked whether there was anything where she specifically disagreed with the current administration in Trenton, Sherrill said that she believed the state has not done enough to foster transparency and increase voters’ trust in government. She cited the Elections Transparency Act, a <a href="https://newjerseyglobe.com/legislature/murphy-signs-controversial-elections-transparency-act-into-law/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">controversial campaign finance overhaul</a> from 2023, and an <a href="https://newjerseymonitor.com/2024/06/05/gov-murphy-signs-bill-revamping-public-records-law-in-blow-to-transparency-advocates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">even more controversial 2024 bill</a> that weakened some parts of the Open Public Records Act, both of which were signed into law by Murphy.“We’ve had a series of corruption scandals,” Sherrill said. “Our state is sadly somewhat known for that in certain quarters. So voters have demanded, and the people of New Jersey deserve, transparency and accountability. I would disagree with certain measures that have been taken to undermine some of those ways in which we provide that to people.”Sherrill is, in some ways, an unlikely messenger for that fight.
