Press Release: Sherrill Wins Re-election to House of Representatives in NJ-11

West Caldwell, NJ—Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill was re-elected tonight to the House of Representatives for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District for a second term. Sherrill claimed a historic victory in the 11th District in 2018, flipping a reliably Republican seat for the first time in over thirty years.

“It is an honor to serve the 11th District,” said Congresswoman Sherrill. “Over the past two years, I have fought to make sure that Washington works for New Jersey, to see that our tax dollars come back to our communities, to lower the cost of prescription drugs, to fund infrastructure projects important to North Jersey, to address issues of justice in our communities, and to support families and businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic. There are many challenges that lie ahead. We will work together to rebuild our economy and ensure a bright future for our children.”

Congresswoman Sherrill is a Naval Academy graduate, Navy veteran and helicopter pilot, former federal prosecutor, and mother of four.

During her first term in Congress, Congresswoman Sherrill led bipartisan legislation to lift the SALT deduction cap, improve our healthcare system, and protect New Jersey’s public lands. Four of her bipartisan bills were signed into law.

Press Release: National Association of Realtors® Political Action Committee Endorses Mikie Sherrill for Congress

West Caldwell, NJ – The National Association of Realtors® Political Action Committee today announced its endorsement of Mikie Sherrill in the race to represent New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representative.

“In her brief tenure on Capitol Hill, Mikie Sherrill has proven herself as someone who understands the importance of real estate, who will fight to defend the American Dream of homeownership, and who is willing to work across party lines to get things done on this country’s behalf,” said Angela Sicoli, NAR’s Federal Policy Coordinator for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. “Within her first several months in Congress, she authored key legislation eliminating SALT caps and continues her work to rectify numerous policies that impact her constituents and homeowners across the country.

“Rep. Sherrill has been recognized as a rising star in the freshman class, and she remains a true champion for Realtors® here in New Jersey and throughout the United States,” Sicoli concluded.

“All New Jerseyans would agree this is a great state to call home. But we need to do more to make New Jersey affordable, starting with lifting the state and local tax deduction cap that has disproportionately affected New Jersey homeowners,” said Representative Mikie Sherrill. “I have heard from Realtors® in my community about how the SALT cap has impacted home values and stifled New Jersey families. That’s why I worked hard to see three bills pass in the House to repeal this harmful cap. I will continue to fight until this legislation is signed into law and I am thankful for the support of RPAC.”

RPAC, the nation’s largest trade association Political Action Committee, follows strict guidelines to ensure candidates are supported based on their defense of private property rights and other policies important to the real estate industry. Candidate endorsements and contributions in New Jersey are recommended and approved by Realtor® Trustees for the REALTORS® PAC of New Jersey and RPAC.

The National Association of Realtors® is America’s largest trade association, representing 1.4 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries. RPAC is the Political Action Committee of the National Association of Realtors®.

Press Release: Essex and Passaic County Sheriffs Endorse Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill

West Caldwell, NJ—Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura and Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik announced today their endorsement of Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill in her bid for re-election.

“I’ve known Congresswoman Sherrill for many years and I know from experience her strength as a leader. As a former federal prosecutor, she understands justice and what it means to serve our communities,” said Essex County Sheriff Fontoura. “She believes we need to properly fund our law enforcement so that we can carry out the many responsibilities asked of us.”

“When Mikie was an Assistant U.S. Attorney here in New Jersey, she worked closely with me and other officers in Passaic County to get illegal guns and drugs out of our communities. In Washington, she has worked hard on Covid-19 related efforts, that has helped our first responders and healthcare professionals as they continue to treat patients through this serious public health crisis,” said Passaic County Sheriff Berdnik.

“I am honored to receive Sheriff Fontoura and Sheriff Berdnik’s endorsements. Both Sheriffs have dedicated their lives to public service, protecting their counties and upholding the law. As a federal prosecutor, I’ve admired the leadership of both Sheriffs Fontoura and Berdnik throughout Essex and Passaic counties and I am thankful for their support,” said Congresswoman Sherrill.

Congresswoman Sherrill previously served at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark as a federal prosecutor and an outreach and reentry coordinator. She worked with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to improve community relations with the police, keep illegal guns off the streets, and address the opioid epidemic. This announcement follows Sherrill’s endorsement from the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police.

Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura is a career law enforcement officer who was first elected Essex County Sheriff in 1990. Fontoura leads the largest and most active Sheriff’s Department in New Jersey. He oversees the busiest and most active Bomb Detection Squads in the region and was appointed in 2007 to the New Jersey Campus Security Task Force to help prevent gun violence on our college campuses. Fontoura is a resident of Fairfield, New Jersey.

Sheriff Richard Berdnik serves as Passaic County Sheriff. Berdnik proudly served 28 honorable years on the Clifton Police Force before becoming Sheriff. As Sheriff, Berdnik modernized the police department through the addition of dashboard cameras in vehicles, new surveillance equipment, robots, and a drone squad. Throughout his career as a police officer, he has received multiple citations for exceptional service.

Press Release: Veterans Group Denounces Rosemary Becchi Over Use of Burning American Flag to Attack Congresswoman Sherrill

West Caldwell, NJ—Commander William D. Squires, USN (Ret) released the following statement on behalf of Veterans for Mikie, calling on Rosemary Becchi to disavow a mailer recently sent out on her behalf to New Jersey voters with an image of a burning American flag with Congresswoman Sherrill’s name next to it:

“To use an image of a burning American flag to attack a sitting U.S. Congresswoman and former Lieutenant in the United States Navy is shameful and despicable. It is an insult to every single person who has put on the uniform.

“Service members risk their lives every day to protect and defend this country so that all of our citizens can enjoy the blessings of liberty that this great country affords. We wear the American flag on our uniform with pride. It is a symbol of our commitment to this country, our values, and our Constitution. Regardless of party, we should all be able to agree that using a burning flag to score cheap political points is wrong.

“Rosemary Becchi must immediately and publicly disavow this hateful mailer. Ms. Becchi has continuously lied about Congresswoman Sherrill’s record of service to our veterans, but to see this type of campaigning is beneath the dignity of the office she seeks.”

Press Release: Vice President Joe Biden Endorses Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill

West Caldwell, NJ—Former Vice President and Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden has endorsed Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) for re-election.

“Mikie Sherrill has served our country throughout her entire career, leading the fight to keep us safe at home and abroad. In Congress, Mikie led the charge to reverse this Administration’s reckless agenda that capped SALT deductions and raised taxes on hardworking New Jerseyans across the state—and she’s just getting started. I’m proud to endorse Mikie Sherrill’s re-election,” said Vice President Biden.

“I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of Vice President Biden. I share his commitment to service and echo his call for compassion over division. He understands the importance of leaders in Congress who will get the pandemic under control, rebuild our economy, and support families struggling under the weight of this crisis. With 40 days until November 3rd, we will work tirelessly to share that message with New Jerseyans,” said Congresswoman Sherrill.

Rep. Sherrill received the Vice President’s endorsement in 2018 during her first race to represent NJ-11 and he keynoted her fall campaign launch at Montclair State University. Biden cited Sherrill’s history of service in the Navy and commitment to standing up for the middle class as reasons to send her to Washington.

Sherrill was elected in 2018, after running on a platform of affordable healthcare, investments in infrastructure, and a fair tax system. During her first term in office, she has kept her promises. She played an important role in crafting the bipartisan Lower Drug Costs Now Act of 2019 (H.R. 3), ensuring a $10 billion investment in cancer research was included in the final bill that passed in the House. Sherrill helped secure $248 million for the Portal Bridge Replacement Project. She also led on the bipartisan Restoring Tax Fairness for States and Localities Act that passed in the House to lift the SALT cap that is stifling New Jersey families. Throughout the pandemic, Sherrill has worked tirelessly to get PPE to our essential workers, funding to our hospitals, and relief for small businesses, voting for both the HEROES Act and CARES Act.

Press Release: Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill Releases Second Campaign Ad Focused on Coming Together During Pandemic

West Caldwell, NJ—Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill announced today the release of her second ad of the 2020 election cycle entitled “Mission.” Sherrill highlights the importance of coming together during the pandemic and her work to support New Jersey hospitals, small businesses, and affordable healthcare.

“When I was a Navy helicopter commander, we never chose our missions, but it was always our job to get them done. New Jersey has been hit so hard by this global pandemic. I fought hard to get more funding to New Jersey hospitals. I’m also working to make sure our businesses can stay in business and to make sure people can afford their healthcare. We all share a mission right now and we all have to do our part,” Congresswoman Sherrill says in the ad.

Throughout the pandemic, Sherrill has worked tirelessly to get PPE to our essential workers and funding to our hospitals as well as funding for local school districts to stabilize public education and save jobs by voting for both the HEROES Act and CARES Act. She was instrumental in passing the Child Care is Essential Act and the Child Care for Economic Recovery Act, in the House, which provides grant funding to child care providers to stabilize the child care sector, helps them safely reopen, and offers tax credit support for childcare providers, low- and middle-income families. Congresswoman Sherrill is leading the bipartisan SMART Act with Representative Peter King (R-NY) in the House and Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) in the Senate to provide $500 billion in direct funding for state, county, and local governments.

I will continue to stand up for our first responders as we move forward with a new relief package,” said Congresswoman Sherrill.

“Social workers are essential to the well-being of so many children, adults, and families in New Jersey and I know we are all grateful for the work they’ve done on the front lines of the pandemic. Press Release: Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill Endorsed by Clean Water Action

West Caldwell, NJ—Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill announced today that Clean Water Action (CWA) endorsed her re-election bid to serve the 11th Congressional District of New Jersey. Since its inception, the CWA has fought for strong health and environmental protections and supported legislators that share their commitment to clean water and healthy communities.

“I am proud to receive Clean Water Action’s endorsement again in 2020. Over the past 19 months, I have held 19 town halls, and our residents have made it very clear that we must unite in protecting our environment. During my first term, I held a congressional hearing right here in our community on lead in the drinking water, and have stood up for clean water, clean air, and growing our clean energy economy. I stand with Clean Water Action in working for a better, brighter future for all New Jerseyans,” said Rep. Mikie Sherrill.

Congresswoman Sherrill has been a champion for the environment throughout her first term in office. As Chairwoman of the Environment Subcommittee on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, Sherrill has held hearings and led on legislation to address flood mitigation, lead in the drinking water, climate-resilient infrastructure, and scientific integrity. In 2019, she fought to keep the United States in the Paris Climate Agreement, increase investment in offshore wind, protect Lake Hopatcong from harmful algal blooms, and prevent offshore drilling along the Atlantic Coast. She led the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act, landmark legislation to fully and permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Clean Water Action was founded during the campaign to pass the Clean Water Act of 1972. CWA builds coalitions within communities at a grassroots level and supports pro-environment candidates who fight for stronger environmental regulations to protect our water, air, and health.

West Caldwell, NJ—Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) today released her first ad of the 2020 election cycle, underscoring the tough balance families are trying to strike between work, kids, and worrying about their health amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Sherrill highlights the work she’s done in Congress to protect access to healthcare.

The 30-second ad buy will run on cable starting September 15th.

“We’re all juggling a lot right now. Working, trying to make sure the kids don’t fall behind, worrying about our parents staying healthy. On top of all of that, you shouldn’t worry that you lose your insurance if you get sick, or that you can’t afford the care you need. That’s why I’m fighting to protect coverage for pre-existing conditions, and to let Medicare negotiate lower drug prices. We’re all going to work together, and we will get through this,” Congresswoman Sherrill says in the ad.

She helped secure $248 million for the Portal Bridge Replacement Project. She led on the bipartisan Restoring Tax Fairness for States and Localities Act that passed in the House to lift the SALT cap that was stifling New Jersey families. Throughout the pandemic, Sherrill has worked tirelessly to get PPE to our essential workers and funding to our hospitals, voting for both the HEROES Act and CARES Act.

Press Release: “Veterans for Mikie” Launches with Community Roundtable

West Caldwell, NJ—Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) yesterday launched “Veterans for Mikie” during a community roundtable with NJ-11 veterans. Sherrill was joined by former U.S. Navy commander Bill Squires, former U.S. Air Force Major Kelly Holliday, and former U.S. Air Force Airborne Operations Specialist/Sensor Operator Jairo Rodriguez.

“I joined fellow veterans yesterday to discuss the pressing issues facing the veteran community. That includes better healthcare, better access to educational and employment opportunities, and improving VA services,” said Rep. Mikie Sherrill. “In my first term, I have championed legislation to pair veterans with service dogs, increase funding for burn pits research, and increase access to child care for veterans with appointments at the VA. I know first hand the sacrifices and responsibilities service members take on to protect and defend our Constitution, and I won’t stop working to improve services for our veteran community.”

“Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy as am I. She served our country with pride and professionalism during her ten years on active duty as a Naval aviator. As a veteran, she understands the needs of veterans and has been supporting and representing the veterans not only in the 11th Congressional District but all veterans who served our great country. She has my faith and confidence, and that is why I will be voting for her in November,” said Bill Squires.

“I am inspired by Mikie’s story — how service to her country and to her fellow veterans continues to drive her after her time in the Navy. When she felt the values of her country and her military honor were threatened by the current administration, she chose to leave her comfortable life to fight for us. As veterans, it is critical that we support her in that fight. She has shown through her voting record, her dedicated outreach, and her willingness to listen that she is a true advocate for vets,” said Kelly Holliday.

“From the onset of Congresswoman Sherrill’s election, she kicked off regular town halls which were critically needed in our district. She hit the ground running right away and listened, which in my book cemented my support. To focus in on the veterans, she has done an amazing job of reaching out to all of the district veteran organizations and conducted many roundtable discussions to ensure that we continue to have a voice and inform us that she has our back! Veterans should be proud to have Mikie Sherrill fighting on our behalf. She cares, she listens and she has our six,” said Jairo Rodriguez.

Sherrill attended the Naval Academy and graduated from flight school in the first class of women eligible for combat. She served in the Navy as a Sea King helicopter pilot for almost ten years, flying missions in Europe and the Middle East.

In her first term in office, she helped found the bipartisan For Country Caucus, which advocates for veterans and their families, and formed the Servicewomen and Women Veterans Caucus to address the needs of women veterans. She led passage of the PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act in the House to pair veterans suffering from PTSD with service dogs, and helped get the VA Tele-Hearing Modernization Act, the Supporting Veterans in STEM Careers Act, and Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act signed into law.

She is a fierce advocate for women veterans, standing up for better women’s health services and child care at the VA, and fighting to stop the recurrence of sexual harassment and assault of women in the military.
